The gameplay of Until Dawn really drew me in with its innovative choice-based storytelling. You control the fate of each character as they get caught up in the terrifying events unfolding around them. The game opens up with your group of friends arriving at the remote mountain cabin for a weekend getaway. However, it doesn’t take long for things to start going wrong and for the characters to realize they aren’t alone in the woods.
As you explore the environments and uncover clues, you’ll frequently be faced with quick time events where you’ll need to make split-second decisions like whether to run from danger or stand your ground during a chase. These choices directly impact which characters live and die. I found it kept me constantly on the edge of my seat, not knowing how my actions would affect the story. You really feel the tension and fear the characters experience.
In addition to the quick time events, you can freely move characters around the mountain locations and find hidden items or clues that provide more context to the mysterious events. Sometimes making the choice to investigate a strange noise or hidden path would lead me to an unexpected scare! The game does a fantastic job of building an unsettling atmosphere.
I also appreciated how your choices carry weight and can’t be re-done. If you make a mistake during a quick time event and a character dies as a result, that’s permanent. You’ll need to live with the consequences for the rest of the game. This added real stakes to every decision. Replaying the game and making different choices leads to many different potential endings, so there’s a lot of replay value as well.
